Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones doubled former rinkmate Cathy Overton-Clapham 6-3 Friday to clinch a semifinal berth at the Sun Life Financial Players’ Championship in Summerside, P.E.I.
Jones and Saskatoon’s Stefanie Lawton — who outscored Chelsea Carey of Morden 7-2 on Friday — both finished with 5-2 records and will meet this morning in a semifinal.
Overton-Clapham, who had already clinched top spot at the final leg of the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling, fell to 6-1 and will take on Sherry Middaugh in the other semifinal.
Middaugh’s Coldwater, Ont., foursome found themselves down 5-1 through five ends after giving up consecutive steals on the third, fourth and fifth ends against Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin. Middaugh got one back on the sixth and then stole a huge three on the seventh and completed the miraculous comeback with another steal of one on the eighth and final end.
The two semifinal winners will meet in this afternoon’s final.
Nedohin downed Eve Muirhead of Scotland 5-3 on Friday, while Middaugh needed an extra end to edge Silvana Tirinzoni of Switzerland 6-5.
On the men’s side, John Epping of Toronto, Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen, Edmonton’s Kevin Martin and world champion Glenn Howard of Coldwater, Ont., all finished at 5-2 and advanced to the semifinals.
Epping lost his final round-robin game 5-2 to Brad Gushue of St. John’s, who stole singles on both of the seventh and eighth ends, while McEwen thumped Niklas Edin’s Swedish rink 6-2 in seven and Martin edged Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton 7-6.
Howard wrapped up his round-robin schedule with a 8-2 seven-end victory over Calgary’s Kevin Koe on the earlier draw.
The men’s final is set for Sunday.
