Hey there, time traveller!

— NEW BLUE BLOOD: The Bombers have added import receiver Jamayel Smith (6-0, 189, Mississippi State) to their roster. Smith spent last year with the New York Sentinels of the United Football League after a solid college career with the Bulldogs. His best season at Mississippi State came as junior in 2007 when he finished second on the team with 510 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
"For a guy that didn’t really have any meeting time and just jumped in there blind he was able to run some of our concepts so he listened very well," said head coach Paul LaPolice.
LaPolice did say that Smith has been on the club’s radar screen for a couple of weeks and his arrival had nothing to do with the handful of drops by the receiving corps on the weekend. Hmmmm….
— DD EN ROUTE?: Bomber linebacker Derrick Doggett was one of seven players cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday and, should he clear NFL waivers over the next 10 days, could be back in Winnipeg not long after. Doggett finished last season second on the Bombers with 27 special-teams tackles and was expected to push Joe Lobendahn for the middle linebacker job before signing with the Steelers.
Said Bomber director of football operations Ross Hodgkinson of Doggett: "He was a demon on special teams here last year. We’d certainly welcome him back to compete for a job."
— THE RUMOUR THAT WON’T GO AWAY: The hot gossip in Hamilton on Tuesday had the Ticats looking to move offensive lineman Zac Carlson, a Winnipeg product, to either the Bombers or Calgary Stampeders. The same speculation was floating around just before the Canadian draft last month, but the Bombers said Tuesday they won’t comment on players on other clubs. The Stamps were in deny mode, too.
"As of right now, he’s part of our team and part of our plans and we plan to develop him," Ticats head coach Marcel Bellefeuille told The Hamilton Spectator.
"If something makes sense for both teams, that’s just part of process, but right now we’re not shopping anyone. He’s come back with a much more professional attitude and in much better shape. We’re happy with that."
— IZZY’S BACK: Chicago Bears defensive lineman Israel Idonije — the pride of Brandon and the University of Manitoba — will be holding his third annual NFL All-Star Football Camp for economically-disadvantaged students on Saturday. The camp, run as part of the Israel Idonije Foundation, will see more than 100 students from grades 5-8 participating in a free, one-day camp about football fundamentals at the Winnipeg Soccer Federation on Chancellor Matheson Road.
