WHATEVER HAPPENED TO?

About these plans to spark the return game by inserting Craphonso Thorpe, who did not field a single punt or kickoff on the night…

“He got a lesson in CFL football (Friday) night,” explained head coach Mike Kelly. “He had trouble in pre-game with the wind handling punts and then I think when the game got going and he found out the speed of this game… it’s typical of a lot of guys who come out of the NFL and come up here and it’s ‘Oh, this isn’t so bad.’ But he got a good dose of how physical the corners can be farther down the field than what he’s used to and how wide the field is and how you really do need to come back to the ball. It was a lesson for him last night.

“I’d still like to see if he can grow into it, but that was a big lesson for him last night. Hopefully he can take what he learned and transform it into something positive.”

TOUGH TOWN?

Kelly told CJOB’s post-game show Winnipeg might not be a great city to develop a quarterback given fans’ frustration about the long Grey-Cup drought, referring to that environment as ‘schizophrenic.’ And he didn’t exactly back away from that a day later.

“Maybe I should have used the term ‘roller-coaster’ instead of the term I used,” said Kelly. “But a couple of weeks ago when we beat Calgary we were mapping out a parade route and now everybody needs to be fired and tarred and feathered and sent to the corner.”

But tougher than Philly? Kelly said the booing of the in-stadium announcement that a fan had won an autographed Stefan LeFors’ jersey to support Purolator’s Tackle Hunger program was a bit much.

“Is it comparable to throwing snowballs at Santa Claus?” said Kelly. “I don’t know if that’s the case, but we did boo a player that wasn’t in the game that was trying to help out a charity. We’re trying to do our best and eventually it’s going to happen. I can ask for all the patience I want, but I know what it is. I get it. Let’s just not boo anybody that’s trying to help out a charity any more, OK? That’s just not Winnipeg. That’s not the Winnipeg I know.”
