One man’s totally subjective rankings of the eight CFL teams at the midway point of the season (last week’s rank in parenthesis):

1. (1) MONTREAL ALOUETTES (7-2) — A stumble in Vancouver, but this is still the best squad in the land.

2. (4) CALGARY STAMPEDERS (5-4) — Looked like a much different team on Labour Day. Looked like the champs.

3. (3) SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS (5-4) — Ken Miller squeezes more out his talent than any other coach in the CFL.

4. (2) EDMONTON ESKIMOS (5-4) — Just when you think they’ve turned a corner they get stomped on by the Stamps.

5. (4) HAMILTON TIGER-CATS (5-4) — A legit playoff contender. And that’s saying something for this organization.

6. (6) B.C. LIONS (4-5) — Don’t count out Wally’s crew just yet.

7. (7) WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS (3-6) — A step backward in the Labour Day Classic.

8. (8) TORONTO ARGONAUTS (2-7) — They just look lost for answers right now.

JUICY NUMBER

2-15: The won-lost record of the Toronto Argonauts since firing Rich Stubler midway through last season. The Argos were 4-6 under Stubler before whacking him, but his replacements — Don Matthews (0-8) last year and Bart Andrus (2-7) this season — haven’t exactly righted the ship.

FYI

Here’s something to consider: Alexis Serna, all-star kicker. There’s still half a season to play, but the Bomber hoofer has hit on 86.4 per cent of his tries — third to Sandro DeAngelis of Calgary (92.3) and Toronto’s Justin Medlock (88.0) — and plays in the most unfriendly kicker facility in the CFL with its swirling winds. Serna is 9 of 11 from 40-49 yards and all three of his misses have been from 46 yards and longer… Last we checked, former Bomber Tom Canada is leading a TSN.ca poll asking ‘Who has the best all-time name in CFL history?’ Among the other candidates are Zenon Andrusyshun, Junior Ah You, Randy Rhino, Julius Caesar Watts and Prince McJunkins III… The Argos activated Eddie Johnson to handle the punting against the Ticats while Justin Medlock continued to place-kick. That made them the first team in CFL history to use two import kickers on their roster… Expect DB Nick Kordic at Bomber practice on Wednesday to replace the injured Brady Browne (elbow). Kordic was released in training camp… These words from Argo head coach Bart Andrus before they were pushed around by the Ticats on Labour Day: “I think we’re really close to turning the corner.” Feel free to add your own punchline here.

SAY WHAT?!

“I just (don’t) like them. They’re too cocky, arrogant, frontrunners. Every time I see that red, every time I see Henry Burris, it burns me up, it pisses me off.” — Eskimo defender Kitwana Jones — BEFORE their loss to Calgary on Labour Day.
