One man’s totally subjective rankings of the eight CFL teams to date this season (last week’s ranking in parenthesis):

1. (1) MONTREAL ALOUETTES (13-3): No A.C. last week and the defence is hurting, but still No. 1.

2. (2) SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS (9-6-1): Rallied to beat the Lions at home.

3. (3) CALGARY STAMPEDERS (9-6-1): Destroyed the Esks and are now sprinting for first.

4. (4) B.C. LIONS (8-8): A legit dark-horse squad.

5. (6) WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS (7-9): Laughingstocks no more.

6. (7) HAMILTON TIGER-CATS (7-9): Kevin Glenn & Co. have got their mojo going.

5. (5) EDMONTON ESKIMOS (7-9): Things are getting ugly in the Alberta capital.

8. (8) TORONTO ARGONAUTS (3-13): Good luck marketing this mess in the off-season.

JUICY NUMBER — 5

This courtesy the Regina Leader-Post: There are only five players on Saskatchewan’s current roster who were alive in 1976, the last time the Roughriders finished first in the West. They are Eddie Davis, Gene Makowsky, Jeremy O’Day, Chris Szarka and Jocelyn Frenette.

FYI

From the department of spin, here is Eskimo offensive lineman Patrick Kabongo in the wake of last week’s 30-7 loss to Calgary: "There’s a fine line between winning and losing," Kabongo told the Edmonton Sun. "Calgary does have a good team, I’m not questioning that, but sometimes they get presented in the media in a way that makes them look a little bit better than they are." Yeah, whatever… juicy tidbit: when the Ottawa Renegades folded in the spring of 2006 and the Roughriders made a deal with Hamilton to get the first overall pick — they grabbed Kerry Joseph — part of the trade included a swap of negotiation-list quarterbacks. Hamilton ended up with the rights to Georgia Tech QB Reggie Ball, the Riders landed the rights to some guy named Darian Durant. All Durant has done is establish himself as the Riders’ QB of the present and the future… Jamall Robertson became the first Argo to rush for 1,000 yards since Michael Jenkins in 2001… Als QB Anthony Calvillo (Las Vegas Posse) and Rider DB Eddie Davis (Birmingham Barracudas) are the only current CFLers who remain from the days of U.S. expansion (1993-95).

SAY WHAT?!

"It’s like a marriage. You want to get married but until you’ve been in a marriage you really don’t know what it’s going to be like." — Eskimo boss Richie Hall, on what his first experience as a head coach has been like this season.
