FYI
— THE OL’ SWITCHEROO: The Bombers have moved Chris Greaves, their sixth-round draft pick this spring, from the defensive line to the offensive line. And the early returns are all positive.
“Boy, he’s got tools,” said head coach Paul LaPolice. “For a kid who has not played football on the offensive side of the ball in about six years… he did one-on-ones against Doug Brown (Sunday) and I asked him this morning during stretch, ‘How’d that go? You against Doug Brown?’ And he said, ‘Coach, you’ve just got to dig in and fight.’ He could be a great offensive lineman in this league. He’s long-armed, he’s athletic and he’s physical.”
The Bombers have yet to decide whether they’d keep Greaves around to groom him or send him back to Western Ontario in the hopes he’d be converted by the Mustangs.
— THE CAMERONS AND THE KICKERS: We told you Monday of hall of famer Bob Cameron working with punter Mike Renaud. On Monday, Cameron brought along son Brett, who now kicks at the University of North Dakota. And the kid’s got game, too. But LaPolice figured that with Cameron around — he’s also now a member of the Bomber board — he should use him as a resource.
“I just walked over to him today and said, ‘Impart knowledge,’ ” LaPolice said. “The nice thing about him is he said, ‘I’m not going to change how this kid punts. He’s a pro and I wouldn’t want somebody to do that to me.’ I think it’s great to have him as a sounding board to help (Renaud) with some things.”
— GOOD HANDS PEOPLE: The Bombers made official the signing of former University of New Hampshire star receiver David Ball. He broke Jerry Rice’s career Division 1-AA record for receiving TDs and has bounced around from the Bears to the Jets to the Alouettes and Tiger-Cats. “He catches the ball very well,” said LaPolice. “I coached at New Hampshire and know the head coach there and that’s what he told me: in his 30 years at New Hampshire he caught the ball better than anyone else he’s ever seen.”
— STRANGE SIGHT: Seeing GM Joe Mack and LaPolice doing push-ups on the field with the team after receivers versus defensive backs drills. LaPolice has to do the mandatory push-ups no matter which side wins the drill competition. “I coach both so I have to do 10 no matter what because I’m neutral,” LaPolice said. “It’s just a competitive thing. It gets the juices flowing.”
— WORTH NOTING: Former Bomber OL Matt Sheridan, who tipped the scales at 383 pounds when veterans reported on the weekend in Calgary, sat out Monday’s workout with the Stamps with an undisclosed injury. He has vowed to get down to around 340 pounds. “I need to get Matt back on the field so he can get down 40 pounds like he predicted in the paper,” Stampeders head coach John Hufnagel told Calgary reporters… Another ex-Bomber, DE Gavin Walls, could be out for a spell in Montreal. He is scheduled to undergo an MRI on a knee he injured Sunday — not the one he hurt here last year… One day after trading Canadian receiver Obed Cetoute to Saskatchewan, the Argos lost draft pick Steven Turner — a Canadian receiver — for the season with a ruptured Achilles tendon.
