STAYING HOME:
Fifty-four players are making the trip to Hamilton this morning, as a number of veterans were given the weekend off by head coach Paul LaPolice.
Topping the exclusion list is defensive tackle Doug Brown, who also sat out the first preseason game against Montreal last weekend. Joining the club’s elder statesman will be end rushers Odell Willis and Phillip Hunt;
defensive backs Keyuo Craver and
Brandon Stewart, and linebacker
Ike Charlton. Notable omissions on the offensive side of the ball include running back Fred Reid,
fullback Daryl Stephenson and slotback Brock Ralph. Stewart, Willis, Stephenson and Ralph are a little banged up.
EARNED REST: On the list of guys not heading to Hamilton the biggest surprise is defensive tackle Don Oramasionwu. The second-year Bomber has had a wonderful camp and his play has caused more than a few to speculate on whether the Winnipeg product could start alongside Brown in the middle of the defensive line. "He’s had a real good camp and he really played well (against the Alouettes) last week," offered LaPolice, not tipping his hand if the former Manitoba Bison could give the Bombers two Canadians up front on defence.
LAST CHANCE: Sunday is the last pre-season game, which means it’s the last chance for some to make a positive impression on the coaching staff. That goes for a few of the veterans, too. "Every person should think about not being secure," LaPolice said.
Asked if he would clip an experienced player to send a message that it’s ‘his team,’ the rookie head man had this take: "If a person doesn’t perform, then you make a change. But just to say, ‘I’m the new guy and I’m going to make a change’ — that doesn’t make a lot of sense to me."
OUT WEST: Winnipeg’s Andrew Harris appears to be in the mix to make the B.C. Lions — although it may not be at his familiar running back position. Lions head coach Wally Buono moved the former junior phenom from running back to wide receiver this week, adding another playbook to the 23-yearold’s plate. "At the end of the day, we want him to be in strong consideration to make our 42 (game roster)," Buono told the Vancouver Sun.
"The role of an athlete like him is to be a multi-tasker."
