— D-DOG BACK: ‘Old home week’ — contained to a single day in Bomberland Monday — started with the return of import LB Derrick Doggett. The special teams buzz saw, who was cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers last month, is expected to help a coverage unit which has been more like Swiss cheese the last two weeks. Three return touchdowns against has put a lot of expectations on the 25-year-old’s arrival, but he’s not too concerned with the pressure to produce right away. "You have to have the mindset that (you’re) going to make the play. And no one can block you," said Doggett. The San Diego-native put up 27 special teams tackles in 2009. Bombers head coach Paul LaPolice calls Doggett "one of the best special teams players in the CFL last year" but tried to take some of the pressure off his newest defender Monday. One player isn’t going to right the special teams ship: It will be up to everyone to fix the coverage issue. "When you have three (touchdown) returns in two games, there are things we have to improve on," LaPolice said. "It starts with me making sure we have the right people in the right spots."

— GOODBYE STRANGER: The Jabari Arthur Era in Winnipeg is over. Arthur, the big Canadian receiver who came over from Calgary (along with Odell Willis and Titus Ryan) in the Romby Bryant trade last September, was released by the team Monday — never having even been on the field in his time with the Blue and Gold. Look for Arthur, 27, to resurface somewhere. Hello, Calgary.

— SMITH OUT: The Bombers are down a Smith for at least the next month. DT Dorian Smith, a second-year import who shows quality run-stopping ability on the D-line, is expected to be out 4-6 weeks after team doctors took a look at his left knee over the weekend. Smith went down in the first quarter in the game against the Argos and on Monday, he was wearing a brace. LaPolice said no surgery will be required.

— OTHER OUCHES: Ian Logan’s timetable is a little less certain. The non-import safety suffered a hamstring pull and did not practice Monday. His status for Friday’s contest in Hamilton is in serious doubt at this stage, as LaPolice said backup Brady Browne should see most of first-team reps in practice this week. Other Bombers on the shelf include DB Alex Suber (hamstring) and FB Daryl Stephenson (undisclosed) also did not practice.

New addition

Please welcome DB Deon Beasley to the Bombers’ practice roster. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound import out of Texas played four years with the Longhorns, making 12 starts. He can return kicks, too.

Uprooted

The Bombers are at Rods Field this week (until Wednesday), thanks to preparations for the Bon Jovi concert extravaganza at Canad Inns Stadium.

Wrong way

The biggest hit on Monday came when WR Terence Jeffers-Harris and SB Brock Ralph collided during their routes. Both appeared fine, but Ralph needed a few extra minutes to reset his clock.
