WHO'S STARTING? No decision yet on who gets the start at quarterback for the Bombers in the Labour Day Classic. Not helping matters was the fact neither Buck Pierce nor Steven Jyles looked very sharp in the misty conditions at practice Thursday morning.

Hey there, time traveller!

WHO’S STARTING? No decision yet on who gets the start at quarterback for the Bombers in the Labour Day Classic. Not helping matters was the fact neither Buck Pierce nor Steven Jyles looked very sharp in the misty conditions at practice Thursday morning.

Head coach Paul LaPolice offered little in the way of hints as to which way he’s leaning, possibly holding off on an announcement for as long as he can to keep the Riders guessing. The coach said people shouldn’t read anything into who has been getting the bulk of the turns with the first-team offence (Jyles), and that Pierce may have some soreness in his right knee, which didn’t have a brace on it again.

When asked what he has to see to give Pierce the green light this time (the last time the club went through this was before a Week 7 loss to Hamilton) LaPolice explained his decision process:

Steven Jyles
Steven Jyles

"If you remember in that game, he threw an interception on an under-thrown ball and I didn’t feel he was able to step into the throw and transfer his weight, so I think it affected his ability to throw the football," the coach said. "Then he had another throw off to the wide side of the field where he couldn’t locate the football. The first and foremost thing, he’s got to be able to locate the football. If he can do that, then the next thing you’re evaluating is his mobility: Is he able to move well enough to avoid an (on-coming) rusher? Then you make the decision on what level of mobility he can play at."

BUSY SIGNAL: Full marks to Jyles, who continues to maintain an even keel throughout the ups and downs of the starting QB drama. Here’s the backup on how much contact he’s had with his buddy (and Saskatchewan starting QB) this week:

"It’s been pretty quiet. I’m surprised (Darian) Durant hasn’t called me yet," Jyles laughed. "But I’m taking it like ‘we’re playing you guys and I don’t want to talk to you right now.’ I’m sure I’ll hear from him later in the week. We’ll catch up and see what we’re going to do after the ball game."

No Edwards yet

SB Terrence Edwards (ankle) did not practise for the second straight day, leading to speculation he’ll miss Sunday’s game. The Bombers are confident Edwards (725 yards and seven TDs) will play, though.

Hicks out

Darian Durant

Strong-side LB Bernard Hicks wasn’t at practice, as the rookie is dealing with a knee injury suffered in the game against Montreal. Pencil in DB Clint Kent or DB Brandon Stewart for that spot.

Money for nothing

The Royal Canadian Mint revealed its ‘Roughriders Centennial Loonie’ Thursday. The coin features the Riders logo on one side and should be in the pocket of every Saskatchewan resident before the long weekend is up.
