THE Winnipeg Blue Bombers defence is inching closer to adding another weapon of pass destruction.

The Bombers are expecting defensive back Jonathan Hefney to arrive in Winnipeg on Tuesday and the club hopes that will soon lead to last year’s CFL East Division Most Outstanding Rookie putting his name on a new contract.

Sources told the Free Press on the weekend that Hefney was seeking a raise while the club was willing to increase his pay providing he sign an extension through the 2011 season.

His arrival doesn’t necessarily mean he has agreed to terms of a new deal, but under terms of his current CFL contract he had to report or risk being suspended by the team.

In any case, expect Hefney to be activated for this Saturday’s critical match-up against the B.C. Lions in Vancouver and his timing couldn’t be more perfect with cornerback LaVar Glover having injured his groin in last Friday’s 44-40 loss to the Montreal Alouettes and expected to miss the next two-three weeks.

The Bombers do have Brandon Stewart available and could also move Clint Kent back to halfback if linebacker Bernard Hicks is activated from the one-game injured list.

Hefney capitalized on a spectacular rookie campaign with the Bombers — he finished with 66 tackles, four interceptions and 10 pass knockdowns — by signing with the Detroit Lions as a player entering the option year of his CFL contract last winter.

But the University of Tennessee product but was released by the Lions in early September and then added to the practice roster before being cut adrift last week, meaning his rights immediately reverted to Winnipeg.

Meanwhile, rookie receiver Greg Carr also hopes to test out his sore shin when the team returns to practice on Tuesday.

Carr was spectacular in his CFL debut, pulling in four passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns.

He’s expected to be joined on the practice field by fellow receiver Terence Jeffers-Harris, who could also be activated for this weekend’s game after missing the last seven games with a high-ankle sprain.

Amazingly, despite being out of action since July, Jeffers-Harris remains fourth in receiving yardage for the Bombers with 317 yards and three touchdowns on 21 receptions.
