Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 30/09/2010 (5521 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
JYLES STILL OUT: It’s not exactly a good situation, having your No. 1 quarterback missing significant time prior to the biggest game of the season, but that’s where Bombers head coach Paul LaPolice finds himself.
QB Steven Jyles (illness) missed his second straight day of practice at Canad Inns Stadium but according to the team his health should not be a factor heading into the final workout of the week.
“I’m sure he’ll practise (today),” LaPolice said. “He still wasn’t in great shape and we wanted to make sure he wasn’t around the players. He’ll get caught up on the game film and we’ll go from there.”
Alex Brink and Joey Elliott handled all the quarterback chores Wednesday, and both have a solid handle on the playbooks in their lockers, but LaPolice was obviously frustrated with the circumstances presented to him this week. With WR Terence Jeffers-Harris coming back after a long layoff and needing to find some chemistry with the No. 1 guy again, not having Jyles back there limits how he can prepare for the B.C. Lions at Empire Field Saturday.
“Things you can’t control,” LaPolice concluded. “Prepare the next guy and just get Steven ready with one day.”
BIRTHDAY BOY: DT Doug Brown celebrated his 36th birthday Wednesday. LaPolice was asked how the veteran continues to be an impact player at such a high-impact position in the middle of the defensive line: “The best players I’ve been around — the oldest players I’ve been around — probably have had the best work ethic,” the coach said. “I’ll name three: Danny McManus, Milt Stegall, and Doug Brown. He still plays at a high level and the reason he does is because he takes care of his body better than the 24-, 23-, 22-year-olds. You can overcome a lot (when you do that).”
MONTHLY MEN: Besides fines, the league also handed out some platitudes.
Two members of the Saskatchewan Roughriders and two from the Toronto Argonauts were named the players of the month Wednesday. Riders QB Darian Durant was a unanimous selection for the offensive award, throwing for 1,387 yards and five TDs. A curious choice, considering the Bombers allowed just two singles against in the Banjo Bowl. Teammate SB Andy Fantuz was named top Canadian for his 22-catch, 449-yard September, as the Riders went 3-1 on the month.
Top defensive player honours went to Argos DE Ronald Flemons. He had 22 tackles, four sacks, two fumble recoveries and two pass knockdowns this month. Toronto KR Chad Owens picked up special teams player, amassing 639 kick return yards for an average of 159.8 yards per game and one punt return TD.
LOOSE BALLS: Check out these numbers for Saturday’s match-up: The Bombers are a disappointing 0-6 on the road, while the Lions are a brutal 1-5 at Empire Stadium… Jonathan Hefney worked out as the sixth defensive back at practice Wednesday… Lions QB Travis Lulay, who gets the call against Winnipeg, has yet to win as a starter in the CFL.

Carr parked
Rookie WR Greg Carr was held out of practice Wednesday. His shin injury was feeling a little sore, and a decision on his status will made today.
Rest day
SB Terrence Edwards, who is just two yards away from a 1,000-yard season, was at practice but did not participate. He was given the day off to rest up some minor ailments he’s been dealing with.
Moved on
Former Bomber WR Dudley Guice Jr. has resurfaced in the Arena Football League, signing with the Spokane Shock earlier this week. Guice was cut by the Indianapolis Colts in training camp.
