One man’s totally subjective rankings after 14 weeks of play (last week’s rank in parentheses):

1. (3) MONTREAL ALOUETTES (10-4): Absolute thrashing of the Stampeders eased growing concerns in Alouettes land.

2. (1) CALGARY STAMPEDERS (10-4): Have lost three of last four. Will the real Stamps please stand up?

3. (2) SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS (9-5): Just waaaay too sloppy in home loss to the Argos.

4. (4) HAMILTON TIGER-CATS (7-7): Big win over the Esks proves nobody teases like Kevin Glenn and the Ticats.

5. (6) TORONTO ARGONAUTS (7-7): Continue to get dominant special teams and defensive work and just enough offence.

6. (5) B.C. LIONS (5-9): Blowing a 21-point fourth-quarter lead against the Bombers could be a back-breaker.

7. (8) WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS (4-10): There is a pulse, albeit faint.

8. (7) EDMONTON ESKIMOS (4-10): See above.

JUICY NUMBERS — 12

Edmonton’s loss to Hamilton on the weekend means the Eskimos will finish with a losing record for only the 12th time in 62 years.

The Bombers’ comeback on Monday drew applause from more than just the diehards here in Manitoba. The victory assured Calgary and Saskatchewan of home playoff dates and keeps the Eskimos, who play B.C. this weekend, in control of their own destiny — even at 4-10. “It doesn’t seem right with the kind of season we’ve had, but we’ve been presented with something that feels almost like a miracle here and if that doesn’t pump you up, I don’t know what will,” Eskimos head coach Richie Hall told The Edmonton Sun. “You should see how big the smile is that I have on my face right now.”… Cross your fingers for Eskimos slotback Jason Barnes, who remains in a Hamilton hospital with a ruptured spleen and a bruised kidney and lung after getting hit by two Ticats while pulling down a 26-yard pass. Doctors are determining whether to remove his spleen and his career very much hangs in the balance. “Every time you put a helmet on, a jersey on, your pants on — you’re always one play away,” Eskimos receivers coach Jason Tucker, whose own career was cut short by a neck injury, told The Edmonton Journal. “That’s why you have to play each play like it’s your last. Enjoy it to the fullest, have fun with it, because you never know when it’s going to end.”… The Riders’ loss to the Argos on Saturday ended their bid to go unbeaten at home for an entire season for the first time since going 8-0 in 1968. And now they’ve got the Stamps at Mosaic this weekend.
