His name is Henoc Muamba and he will soon be wearing Winnipeg Blue Bomber colours.
It won’t be officially official until the Bombers call out his name, but a source told the Free Press Wednesday the club plans to take the St. Francis Xavier linebacker with the first overall pick in Sunday’s CFL Draft.
Muamba, the President’s Trophy winner last year as the top defensive player in Canadian college football, has apparently had a flight booked by the football club and will be in Winnipeg on the weekend for the draft.
“He’s a versatile player, an exceptional athlete and a superb linebacker who can also rush the passer,” said the source.
“Everybody can see that on the field. What a lot of people might not know is he’s an unbelievable person whose character is off the charts.”
A product of Mississauga, Ont., the 22-year-old three-time CIS All-Canadian blew away CFL personnel at the evaluation camp in Toronto in March with outstanding results in individual testing and in one-one-one drills.
In fact, his showing was so impressive it helped him shoot up the CFL Scouting Bureau rankings from 10th to third, behind Rice tackle Scott Mitchell and Calgary receiver Anthony Parker.
Worth noting is new Bomber defensive co-ordinator Tim Burke was instrumental in helping Shea Emry, drafted in the first round by the Montreal Alouettes in 2008, develop into a solid starter.
Bomber GM Joe Mack said Wednesday the club will have to be patient with whomever they select in the draft, especially the first-overall pick.
“Any time you have a first-round pick you hope they contribute right away,” said Mack.
“They’d be contributing on special teams and get some spot duty, but we wouldn’t anticipate any rookie starting right away.
“It’s an awfully big jump to go from the CIS or a college program right into starting in the CFL. I think they’ll contribute, but you want to manage expectations there.”
The Bombers could get offensive line help with their fourth-overall pick if they don’t trade it and are expected to nab Central Michigan receiver Kito Poblah in the supplemental draft later this month.
