As injured veteran defensive back Jonathan Hefney watched from the sidelines on Thursday for the third consecutive day, Johnny Sears continued to make the most of his opportunity to audition for the job.

Sears, a second-year player out of Eastern Michigan, hauled down an interception, broke up a half-dozen passes and was generally a force to be reckoned with in what was the most competitive and vocal practice the Bombers have held so far this training camp.

Sears played a couple of games for the Bombers at a few different positions at the end of last season — he was a late cut of the Cincinnati Bengals — and came to camp this spring with a legitimate chance to win a starting job.

With Hefney sidelined by an ailing ankle — a walking boot he had worn on Tuesday and Wednesday was gone on Thursday — Sears has taken full advantage of the chance to show his stuff.

“It’s fun here, I like it. You can fly around, it’s fast, it’s a passing league so you get your chances,” said Sears. “I’m just trying to control what I can control and play as hard as I can — have enthusiasm and bring my passion and just leave it all out on the field.”

Bombers head coach Paul LaPolice said Sears stood out on a day when the intensity hit a new high. “What they did today was they really competed,” said LaPolice, referring to the running battles — physical and vocal — between the offensive and defensive teams all practice.

“That’s part of the competitive edge. I’m trying to get more guys to do that. Johnny Sears did it tremendously today. I said, ‘Hey, remember we’re always a team at the end. But compete.'”

Pryor, CFL a no-go

Terrelle Pryor’s lawyer confirmed Thursday that the suspended Ohio State quarterback has no interest in playing in the CFL this season.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders caused a small sensation Wednesday when it was learned they had placed Pryor on their negotiation list and had made a formal offer to him.
