IN SICK BAY…

The long list of walking wounded at Winnipeg Blue Bombers training camp grew even longer Sunday as receiver Greg Carr came up lame in a one-on-one drill against DB Arrington Hicks.

Carr pulled his right hamstring on the play and left the field for the rest of practice, bringing to 12 the list of injured Bombers not practising at Canad Inns Stadium on Sunday.

Here’s the list, in no particular order, of the other players spectating on Sunday:

DE Deji Oduwole (hip); DB Alex Suber (muscle pull); DB Jonathan Hefney (ankle); WR Kito Poblah (achilles); WR Damian Sherman (hamstring); DB Deon Beasley (hamstring); WR Greg Betterson (knee); WR Aaron Hargreaves (ankle); WR Scott McHenry (neck); WR David McKoy (quad); C Obby Khan (groin).

While that might sound like a spate of injuries beginning to demand explanation, head coach Paul LaPolice said it is neither remarkable nor of particular concern.

“That’s just training camp,” said LaPolice. “As a group, I think we’re pretty healthy across the board.”

LaPolice did say, however, that it is unusual that so many of the injuries — 7 of 12 — involve receivers. “There’s a trickle-down effect,” LaPolice explained. “When you start losing receivers, then more guys have to go more and sometimes you get fatigue.

“So that’s why our practices have been shorter and we haven’t done one-on-ones for three days. Today we did one-on-ones, but we’re trying to be cognizant of guys’ legs.”

LaPolice ended practice 40 minutes early on Sunday for that exact reason. “I just didn’t want to fatigue them anymore.”

The injured list should shrink today. LaPolice said Hefney is finally expected to return to the field today, as is Beasley and Betterson. Everyone else is described as day-to-day, with the exception of Khan — who LaPolice describes simply as “longer than that.”

The good news is the injured will receive some respite this week when the club travels to Montreal to face the Alouettes Thursday in the first pre-season game for both teams.

LaPolice said a coaches’ meeting was scheduled for Sunday at which time the club would make decisions on who they will be taking with them to Montreal.

LaPolice said he doesn’t anticipate making any cuts following Thursday’s game to a roster the coach says is unusually deep. “(Sometimes) there are guys who really couldn’t help you, who really look lost. But I don’t see that at this camp.”
