Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive end Jason Vega and punt returner Demond Washington were named CFL players of the week Tuesday.

On the strength of his three sacks and six total tackles in Winnipeg’s heartbreaking 25-24 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Banjo Bowl Sunday, Vega picked up the defensive player award. It’s the second time in his career he’s received the nod.

Vega’s three sacks now give him five on the season, tying him with fellow lineman Bryant Turner for second in the league.

Washington’s 82-yard punt return for a touchdown in the first quarter of the game earned him the special teams players of the week honour.

His major was the second time he’s run back a kick for a touchdown this year (Week 2 versus Montreal).

The 24-year-old Auburn-product has 1,371 combined return yards this season, good for third among CFL returners.

Vega and Washington are the fourth and fifth Bombers to receive a player of the week award. Kicker Justin Palardy, quarterback Joey Elliott and defensive end Alex Hall have also been recognized for their efforts this season.

Winnipeg (2-8) travels to Alberta to face the Calgary Stampeders (6-4) Friday night.
