Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 12/09/2012 (4803 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
- Physically, Carl Volny is back to full strength. Mentally, though, he’s still coming around.
The non-import running back is expected to be back in the Blue Bombers lineup when they play the Stampeders in Calgary Friday night. The 24-year-old has been out of commission since Sept. 24, 2011 after tearing his ACL in a game against the Toronto Argonauts.
It’s been a long recovery process for Volny. He’s missed 16 games trying to get the strength back in his knee, only to find he had a hamstring issue that came about post-surgery. Volny has never had to deal with an injury like this before. He noted how players return from it all the time and the numerous success stories, but until it happens to your own knee you never know how you’ll react.
And just because a guy like Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson comes back from the same injury in eight months doesn’t make that the new standard of recovery, either.
Everyone is different, Volny said Tuesday.
“I don’t want something to happen again,” he said. “Coming back from an ACL injury — not many people are the same. They don’t feel as strong as they were back then. For me to have that, I feel like I need to be stronger than I was last year.”
Volny will see time in the offence and on special teams, says the head coach.
“He’s going allow us to do some things offensively that will maybe put a little more pressure on the defence than what we’ve had,” said Tim Burke, referencing Volny’s ability to catch the ball out of the backfield.
The addition of Volny means import backup tailback Will Ford will be taken out. The Bombers are adding slotback Isaac Anderson to the roster. Anderson (5-foot-10, 170-pounds, Wisconsin) has been on the practice roster all season.
- Defensive end Jason Vega and punt returner Demond Washington were named the defensive and special teams players of the week, respectively, the league announced Tuesday.
Vega had three sacks in Sunday’s 25-24 loss to Saskatchewan and feels the Winnipeg D-line, a group that had six sacks in that game, is finding its way after a slow start.
“We’ve started to get better every game, in some way, shape or form, and we’ve actually started to put things together,” said Vega, who has five sacks this season, tied with fellow lineman Bryant Turner for second in the league.
Washington picked up his award for his 82-yard punt-return touchdown in the Banjo Bowl — his second punt-return touchdown this season.
LOGAN, BRINK MISSING
Winnipeg went through a light, low-impact workout Tuesday, a walk-through designed to give the players some extra time to recover from Sunday’s loss. Safety Ian Logan (sick) and quarterback Alex Brink (personal) were excused from the practice. Both could be back on the field this morning, the club said.
CORNISH GAME FUN
The Bombers defence spent most of Tuesday’s session working on figuring out how to stop Calgary running back Jon Cornish, the CFL’s rushing leader (827 yards). Linebackers Pierre-Luc Labbe and Henoc Muamba took turns playing the role of Stamps QB Kevin Glenn, while long-snapper Chris Cvetkovic served as the Cornish clone.
