Musical quarterbacks annoys Edwards

WINNIPEG receiver Terrence Edwards says playing with a quarterback other than the No. 1 just doesn’t cut it.

“You see all the good teams have their No. 1 guy in there,” he said.

“It’s just that simple. They’re not all changing quarterbacks. Montreal has Anthony (Calvillo). Hamilton has Henry (Burris). B.C. has (Travis) Lulay. I don’t care what league you’re in or what level. It’s tough to win games when the No. 1 quarterback is in and out of the lineup. That’s been us for two years now.”

Bombers quarterback Buck Pierce was injured on a helmet-to-helmet hit delivered by Toronto linebacker Brandon Isaac in a 29-10 Bombers loss at Canad Inns Stadium Saturday evening.

Isaac said there was no intent to injure.

“I had no intention to hit him helmet-to-helmet,” said Isaac. “I was trying to hit him in the chest. I guess I wasn’t too accurate.

“I was just trying to get to the quarterback as fast as possible, and I got there fast. Unfortunately, his chin got split.”

Edwards says it’s not his decision to determine what course the club should take at quarterback.

“I’m just a player and I go out and do my job whoever is in there. I get paid to catch footballs. I don’t get paid to make decisions. That’s something you’ll have to go and ask Mr. (Joe) Mack or coach Burke.”

Burke says Pierce is his team’s best quarterback but the rest of the team must help out when he’s not in the lineup.

“There’s a reason a quarterback is your No. 1 and Buck certainly gives us a lot when he’s in there,” said Burke.

“The other thing is you can’t drop balls when the quarterback delivers them to you. That’s not the quarterback’s fault. We had way too many turnovers.

“I think we were in scoring position seven times and turned the ball over seven times. Some of that is the quarterback’s fault and some of it isn’t.”
