THE man named the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ top defensive player during their first 50 years of existence will be honoured once again Saturday.

Herb Gray, who captained the Blue Bombers for nine of his 10 seasons with the club, will enter the team’s Ring of Honour at Investors Group Field at halftime of Winnipeg’s tilt with the B.C. Lions.

Gray becomes the eighth inductee into the team’s shrine honouring the club’s all-time greats.

“While Herb Gray has many accolades to his name, spending nine seasons as team captain may be what speaks the most to his character and value to the football club,” said Bombers president and CEO Wade Miller.

Gray manned the line on both sides of the ball as a guard and a defensive end during the club’s golden era in the 1950s and 1960s. Gray would go on to win four Grey Cups with the Bombers and was inducted in the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1983.

The Texas native died in 2011 at the age of 76.
