Receiver Meredith cut, linebacker Brown arrives

ANOTHER former NFL player with an impressive resumé leaves the CFL without having made an impact.

At least for now.

The Blue Bombers released wide receiver Cameron Meredith from the practice roster Tuesday to free up a spot for newly signed linebacker Kevin Brown.

Meredith, a 6-3 receiver from Illinois State who had 66 receptions for 888 yards and four touchdowns with the Chicago Bears in 2016, hurt himself at the beginning of training camp and never really got to show what he can do in the Canadian game. The 28-year-old had also spent time with the New Orleans Saints and New England Patriots before a knee injury cost him his NFL career.

“He’s not ready to practise, so we need his spot on the practice roster for a guy that can run around out there and take some reps off other guys. That’s all it really was,” head coach Mike O’Shea said.

“Cameron Meredith is, we believe, a very good football player. It’s just unfortunate that we can’t utilize him right now. But we’ll see, going forward. But he’s a good football player.”

O’Shea was asked if the door is closed on Meredith returning to the team in the future.

“We’ll see. We’ll see how long it takes for him to rehab,” he said.

Meredith was living in Winnipeg before the Bombers signed him on July 1. He’s dating a Winnipegger and the couple has two children and a house in the city.

Brown, 27, was on the field with his new team on Tuesday. The Indianapolis, Ind., native played three seasons with the Ottawa Redblacks and had previously spent training camp with the Edmonton Elk. During his time in Ottawa, Brown had 112 tackles, 37 special teams tackles, three sacks, two interceptions and one forced fumble.

ADAMS BACK TO WORK

Wide receiver Darvin Adams (shoulder) was a full participant on Tuesday for the first time in nearly four weeks. He caught several passes on the day and was on the field when the team was working on their onside kick coverage.

However, that doesn’t guarantee that the 31-year-old out of Auburn is guaranteed to suit up on Saturday in Toronto.

“That’s not my call,” he said.

“I’m just going to be prepared in every way that I can be. Whatever coach says, that’s what we’ll do.”

KRAMDI OUT OF ACTION

Rookie defensive back Redha Kramdi, a special teams demon out of the University of Montreal, was hit from behind in the team’s 20-7 victory last week at home against Toronto. O’Shea told reporters Tuesday that they expect Kramdi to be out for a while.
