TORONTO – Davis Alexander’s record-setting start to his CFL career won’t be affected by the league playoffs.
The Montreal quarterback is 11-0 as a starter, the best mark in league history by a quarterback to begin his CFL career. But that’s a regular-season record, meaning if the Alouettes lose Saturday to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the East Division semifinal, it won’t count against Alexander.
He would still open the 2026 campaign having recorded 11 consecutive regular-season victories.
As well, if Alexander leads Montreal to a Grey Cup title, he’d be credited with three playoff victories and his 11-0 regular-season mark would remain as is. According to the CFL, regular-season and post-season records are treated as separate entities.
The five-foot-11, 210-pound Alexander was 7-0 this season — his first as Montreal’s full-time starter. He won his first four contests in 2024 filling in for injured starter Cody Fajardo.
Montreal signed Alexander to a three-year extension last November. The Alouettes then confirmed Alexander as their starter by dealing Fajardo to the Edmonton Elks for veteran quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson.
Alexander, 27, completed 158-of-218 passes (72.5 per cent) for 2,024 yards with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions this season. He also ran 12 times for 108 yards (9.2-yard) and a touchdown.
Montreal (10-8) was certainly a different team with Alexander than it was without him, going 3-8 in games Alexander didn’t start. Bethel-Thompson was 3-5 under centre while James Morgan (0-2) and Caleb Evans (0-1) were the other starters.
Alexander twice missed significant time this season with a hamstring ailment.
Alexander was originally slated to start Montreal’s regular-season finale Saturday in Winnipeg. But Bethel-Thompson got the nod after the Hamilton Tiger-Cats defeated the Ottawa Redblacks 35-15 on Friday night to clinch first in the East Division.
Bethel-Thompson finished 17-of-34 passing for 182 yards and an interception in Winnipeg’s 19-10 home victory.
