Singer a studious student for the Blue and Gold

Ken Wiebe 7 minute read Yesterday at 6:45 PM CDT

Dorian Singer is proud of his path.

For the Winnipeg Blue Bombers receiver hopeful, those twists and turns included the decision to leave Minnesota for Arizona for his final year of high school football.

A two-way player that was turning heads as a receiver and safety, Singer felt the move would lead to more scholarship opportunities at a Power 5 school and the sacrifice was one he was willing to make — even if it meant his parents had to sign over legal guardianship to the Dampier family at the time.

“My journey is different from everybody else’s, which I love,” said Singer. “I take pride in what I do because I know it hasn’t been easy for me. The easiest way is to give up and I haven’t given up. I keep taking those steps forward to elevate myself.”

Linebacker Clinton making strong case to be kept on Bombers roster

Taylor Allen 6 minute read Yesterday at 6:32 PM CDT

Ja’Kobe Clinton’s path to the pros hasn’t been anywhere near as glamorous as his brother’s.

The aspiring Winnipeg Blue Bombers linebacker had to scratch and claw just to continue playing after high school. Then there’s his well-known sibling, former Pro Bowl safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix — a two-time national champion at Alabama who was chosen in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers.

He went on to play eight NFL seasons and made approximately US$20 million in career earnings.

“That set the bar way tremendously high for me. But like I tell everybody, we got two different roads and I kind of took the harder route,” Clinton told the Free Press after Bombers practice on Tuesday.

Mahomes takes part in Chiefs’ first voluntary workout, just 5 months after undergoing knee surgery

Dave Skretta, The Associated Press 3 minute read Yesterday at 6:43 PM CDT

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes took part in the first voluntary workout of the offseason program on Tuesday, just over five months after he underwent surgery to repair ligaments in his left knee and four months ahead of their season opener.

The practice was closed to reporters, but the Chiefs posted a clip on social media that showed the two-time MVP making throws with his left knee in a brace. The Chiefs are scheduled to work again Wednesday before speaking with reporters on Thursday.

“He's in a good position to do some things,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said earlier this month. "There’s some rules and regulations that go with that, so we just have to make sure we’re on top of that part. But if he can do some things — phase 2 (of the offseason), remember, is there’s no contact, no offense versus defense. It’s phase 3 that you get into that.

“So you just have to evaluate what you want to do there,” Reid said. "He’s in a position where he can do everything, I think.”

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Trevor Lawrence received dozens of texts following his most recent haircut.

Even his grandma weighed in.

But no one had anything nice to say about what the Jacksonville Jaguars did — or seemingly did — to their franchise quarterback. The team’s schedule release video earlier this month featured Lawrence apparently getting his long blond locks chopped.

It turned out to be a deep fake.

Now in Year 4, QB Bryce Young taking on a more vocal leadership role with the Panthers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young had seen enough after several wet footballs were dropped by his receivers at OTAs on Tuesday following a heavy rainstorm in Charlotte.

And he let his teammates have it, reminding them it wasn't acceptable.

“It isn't raining anymore," Young could be heard shouting at teammates. "Let's clean this up, now. It's not raining anymore. We need better execution.”

The 2023 No. 1 overall draft pick has slowly been developing into a more vocal leader as he enters Year 4 of his tenure with the Panthers. Tuesday offered a public insight into that growth after Young's profanity-laced outburst.

GUELPH - The band is back together, and Tarvarus McFadden couldn't be happier.

Veteran defensive backs DaShaun Amos and Robert Priester rejoined Toronto in the off-season after spending 2025 with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Ottawa Redblacks, respectively. In 2022 and '24, McFadden, Amos and Priester all helped the Argonauts win Grey Cup championships.

"It's great that we have those guys back," McFadden said following Tuesday's practice at Alumni Stadium. "We communicate, we know where the others are going to be at certain times on the field and during certain plays.

"It's just been great."

Manny Fernandez, key part to the 1972 perfect Dolphins season, dies at 79

The Associated Press 2 minute read Yesterday at 1:36 PM CDT

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Manny Fernandez, a two-time Super Bowl-winning defensive lineman with the Miami Dolphins who was an anchor during the team's undefeated season in 1972, has died, the team announced Tuesday. He was 79.

No cause of death was announced by the team.

Fernandez played his entire eight-year NFL career with the Dolphins and was a key pillar on Miami's “No-Name Defense," which helped the team reach consecutive Super Bowls from 1971-1973, including back-to-back Super Bowl wins in 1972 and 1973.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Manny Fernandez,” the Dolphins said in a statement, “a member of the 1972 perfect team, a two-time Super Bowl champion, ring of honor member and an anchor of the Dolphins' legendary ‘No-Name Defense.’ His consistent and selfless contributions on the field were instrumental to the Dolphins' success throughout the early 1970s, particularly in the team's three consecutive Super Bowl appearances, in which he produced some of the most memorable defensive performances in the history of the game.”

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Argentine police arrested two Chilean citizens suspected of being part of a transnational gang that orchestrated burglaries at the homes of well-known athletes, including stars from the NBA and NFL.

The arrests took place at the Retiro bus station in Buenos Aires, the Argentine Federal Police confirmed in a statement Monday.

The two detainees, who were not identified, remained in custody awaiting extradition proceedings requested by the United States.

Third Texada could be just right for Bombers

Taylor Allen 5 minute read Monday, May. 25, 2026

Rookie defensive back Ridge Texada is the third member of his family to be under contract with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

His two older brothers, fellow defensive backs Ranthony and Raleigh, were also Bomber hopefuls at one point.

Before going on to play 11 career games between Ottawa and Montreal, Ranthony signed a deal in 2020, but the cancelled season prevented him from suiting up in blue and gold. Fast forward a few years, Raleigh signed ahead of the 2024 campaign before being released midway through training camp.

Their father, Ranthony Sr., was a receiver at Louisiana Tech.

McCarthy embracing CFL life after championship run last season with Indiana Hoosiers

Dan Ralph, The Canadian Press 5 minute read Monday, May. 25, 2026

HAMILTON - This month has been a whirlwind for Mitch McCarthy.

It began at the New England Patriots' rookie camp, then came a quick trip to the White House before finally reporting to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats training camp. On Saturday, the Australian-born punter participated in his first CFL game, a 20-10 exhibition loss to the Toronto Argonauts.

But if 2025 taught McCarthy anything, it was how to manage expectations, overcome adversity and successfully adapt to ever-changing situations. On Jan. 19, the 28-year-old capped his collegiate career celebrating an NCAA championship after the top-seeded Indiana Hoosiers downed the Miami Hurricanes 27-21 for their first-ever College Football Playoff crown.

"I've processed it," McCarthy said. "I've been able to kind of sit back, take it in and realize what I was a part of.

Bombers’ pre-season opener a mixed bag

Taylor Allen 6 minute read Sunday, May. 24, 2026

In typical pre-season fashion, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers showcased some good and bad in Saturday’s 31-27 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Saskatoon.

The Blue and Gold will have one final tune-up on Friday when they host the B.C. Lions (7:30 p.m. kickoff). The real action begins when they’re in Calgary for Week 1 on June 5.

But before they look ahead, there’s a lot from Saturday that needs to be dissected.

“It’s tough coming off a camp and we don’t give them much rest at all. I thought they showed well in terms of their compete level,” said head coach Mike O’Shea after the game.
