MAZATLAN, Mexico — Canadians Scott Hawley and Adam Speirs fired matching five-under-par 67s to share a one-stroke lead over eight players after the first round of the Mexican PGA Championship on Thursday.
Speirs of Winnipeg, playing bogey-free golf, had it to four under through 16 but dropped one at No. 17. Yet he bounced back with an eagle at the par-5 eighteenth to grab a share of the lead with his fellow Canadian.
In second spot at 68 are Peter Laws of Toronto, Mitch Gillis of Williams Lake, B.C., Mike Mezei of Lethbridge, Alta., Liam Kendregan, defending champion John Ellis, Cody Slover, Mike Sica, Eugene Smith and Daniel Im.
Shooting 69 today were Rob Grube, California Q-School winner Aaron Goldberg, Chris Wall, Jon McLean, Andy Matthews, Tom Stankowski, Wes Heffernan of Calgary, Brian Benedictson of Comox, B.C., and Fall Q-School winner Robert Gates.
