Parkade thieves bust into golfers’ cars

TWO veteran Canadian Tour members keep returning to Winnipeg for the annual Players Cup but there’s one regular element of their visits they could do without.

Car break-ins.

Darren Griff of B.C., and Mike Grob of Montana, were both victims of break-ins Tuesday night. Their cars were parked overnight in a parkade in downtown Winnipeg.

It’s the third time it’s happened to Grob — the tour’s all-time leading money-winner — in Winnipeg and the second here for Griff.

"Just lost a pair of sunglasses, some change, some CDs," Grob said Thursday before teeing off in the $200,000 tournament. "The clubs were safe. I took them into the hotel."

Griff was decidedly more annoyed with the incident.

"They felt they had to break two windows, front left and back right for easy access," Griff said.

Griff, who finished second here in 2006, said he lost some electronics and a piece of his equipment with sentimental value.

"The thing I’m most pissed about is they took an old Titleist ball bag, an old leather one, I’ve had for 15 years," he said. "What do a bunch of (deleted) need with a Titleist ball bag?

"It’s $600 I could have spent elsewhere, getting those windows replaced. But I’ve got my golf clubs, got my passport and I’ve got my wallet."

Griff said he saw four vehicles that were damaged and broken into in the parkade overnight Tuesday, including his and Grob’s.
