WINNIPEG Free Press sports writer Tim Campbell was honoured on Tuesday, winning two awards from the Golf Journalists Association of Canada (GJAC) for excellence in golf journalism in 2008.
The presentations were made at the inaugural awards luncheon at St. George’s Golf and Country Club, site of the 2010 RBC Canadian Open. It is the first time the GJAC has presented writers’ awards, and Campbell was recognized twice in the newspaper category for both editorial and feature writing.
"We’re really proud of Tim; he’s on a roll this week," said Free Press editor Margo Goodhand. "His coverage of the Manitoba Moose was recognized just a few days ago in an award from the American Hockey League. Tim’s a versatile and talented member of the Free Press sports team."
In the newspaper editorial category, Campbell received first place with his column of June 24, 2008, which urged the Royal Canadian Golf Association and CN to bring the Canadian Women’s Open to Winnipeg. About 11 months later, the RCGA announced the Open would take place at Winnipeg’s St. Charles Country Club, Aug. 26-29, 2010. Campbell placed second in the newspaper feature writing category with his full-page feature June 14, 2008, on the construction of the new Southwood Golf and Country Club in St. Norbert, which included innovative layout and design by Free Press art director Gordon Preece, and photos by Mike Aporius.
