City’s Bieber into
Big Break’s final eight
There are eight contestants left on Golf Channel’s Big Break Sandals Resorts and Winnipegger and former Manitoba Amateur champ Stacey Bieber is one of them.
A new episode of the popular show and another elimination challenge airs every Monday at 8 p.m. CT.
Kid wins tourney spot
Six-year-old Bailey Bjornson of Winnipeg has qualified again for the U.S. Kids World Golf Championship, to be held Aug. 5-7 at fabled Pinehurst Resort.
Bjornson won the Minnesota qualifying tournament in his division (seven-year-olds) with a nine-hole score of 40 at Oak Marsh Golf Course. Qualifiers are held around the U.S. to determine if hopefuls can meet the USKWGC scoring requirement and gain a priority invitation.
Divisions are held for ages 6 through 12 for boys, and 7 (and under) through 12 for girls.
Playoff decides berth
Taylor Reilly of Niakwa parred the first playoff hole at Larters at St. Andrews and earned a berth at the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships in Palm Beach, Fla., later this month.
The rain-shortened Manitoba qualifier at Larters was 27 holes and Reilly and Pine Ridge’s Dominic Payne finished regular play with scores of 113. Reilly made up a four-shot deficit on the final nine of the event, and the pair went back to Larters’ 18th tee to decide the Florida berth.
The 13th annual Manitoba Optimist championship saw 45 players brave the elements at Larters and the Meadows at East St. Paul.
Breanne Fredette earned the berth for the girls championship, also to be played in Florida.
Pair kicks with a 66
Dean North and Scott Borsa of Carman combined for a six-under 66 in the best-ball format to take top prize at this week’s PGA of Manitoba Pro-Assistant champinship at Hecla Oasis Golf Course.
North and Borsa bested runners-up Steve Witiuk of South Interlake and Andrew Hunt of Hecla by one shot.
