WINNIPEG Free Press sports writer Tim Campbell was honoured twice Tuesday in Vancouver by the Golf Journalists Association of Canada at its annual writing awards ceremony.

Campbell received the top award in the Newspapers-Editorial category for the column he wrote last summer about how the game’s reputation can be tarnished by quirky rules decisions, inspired by female professional golfer Julie Inkster’s disqualification at the Safeway Championship in Portland the week prior to the CN Canadian Women’s Open in Winnipeg last summer.

He took second place in the Newspapers-News/Profiles/Features category for his entertaining feature on local golf pro Derek Ingram, which ran as a Saturday Special full-page feature last July.

“Tim has always been regarded as one of the top golf writers in Canada and awards like this affirm his talent and ability,” said Winnipeg Free Press sports editor Steve Lyons.

There are only two newspaper categories at the awards, which were presented for work in 2010 and also include seven other categories. Campbell also had a first- and second-place finish with a pair of stories in 2009 chosen by the Golf Journalists Association.

“It’s gratifying to be recognized by your peers,” Campbell said. “To be able to write about golf has been nothing short of a privilege. The game has given me so many experiences and brought me into contact with so many great people.”
