THE relocation of the AHL’s Manitoba Moose remained on True North Sports & Entertainment’s to-do list Wednesday.

The day after True North announced its purchase and proposed relocation of the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers, the St. John’s Telegram reported a deal to move the AHL’s Moose to the Newfoundland and Labrador capital is now a tentative agreement. Former N.L. premier Danny Williams is leading the group trying to place the future AHL affiliate of the new Winnipeg team into the city’s Mile One Centre, the former home of the AHL’s St. John’s Maple Leafs.

Williams’ group, which includes current Hamilton Bulldogs executive Glenn Stanford, will operate the business of the club while True North retains its ownership of the franchise.

The St. John’s group was still meeting and working Wednesday to finalize a lease for the arena.

True North spokesman Scott Brown said Wednesday night the arrangement with the St. John’s group continues to move along in the process but True North didn’t have any announcement to make yet on the matter.

Despite some snags on the St. John’s end of things last week, there is every expectation the deal will be finalized.

Barring that, AHL president David Andrews confirmed on Tuesday that the other option in play for the Moose franchise would be to go dark for one season before being reactivated.
