NIKOLAI ZHERDEV has found a new hockey home — and it’s not with the Winnipeg Jets or any other NHL squad, but across the pond.

Russian newspaper Sport Express is reporting the 26-year-old forward, who has 115 goals in 421 NHL games with Columbus, the New York Rangers and Philadelphia, will officially join Moscow-based Atlant Mytischi of the Kontinental Hockey League today.

Zherdev is rejoining the club he played for in 2009-10 after the New York Rangers walked away from his arbitration award. Last weekend Atlant also announced the addition of NHL veteran Alex Kovalev.

Matt Slocum / The Associated Press Philadelphia Flyers' Mike Richards, from left, Nikolai Zherdev, of Ukraine, and Scott Hartnell celebrate after Zherdev's goal in the second period of an NHL preseason hockey game against the Buffalo Sabres, Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, in Philadelphia.

The former fourth-overall draft pick by the Blue Jackets in 2003, Zherdev returned to the NHL last year after signing a US$2-million deal with the Flyers and had 16 goals and 22 points in 56 games.

It was believed the Jets, still said to be looking to boost the offensive punch on their top two lines, were interested in Zherdev, who did play for Claude Noel while the two were together in Columbus in 2008-09. That story was further stoked after Zherdev made comments to a Philadelphia sports blog that he wouldn’t be against playing in Winnipeg.

That said, the Jets never did officially confirm any interest, consistently referring to all the reports as “rumours.”

Neither Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff or assistant GM Craig Heisinger were available for comment Wednesday.

Meanwhile, The Everett Herald is reporting that Everett Silvertips director of player development Scott Scoville — one of the WHL team’s original hirings — has left the club to take a scouting position with the Jets.

Scoville was hired as the Silvertips’ head scout in 2002 and was promoted to director of player development in 2005.

“It’s pretty exciting for him,” Silvertips GM Doug Soetaert, a former Jets goalie, told the Herald.

“He’s been with us nine years and he’s done a very good job. I enjoyed working with him and putting these teams together. As a head scout in this league you’ve got two ways to go, either get a general manager’s job on this league or a scouting job in the NHL. This came along and he’s excited about it. It’s a step up and definitely in the right direction for his career.”

Scoville will join the Jets in September.
