The Winnipeg Jets are gearing up for their return to the NHL and opening night vs. the Montreal Canadiens Oct. 9 at the MTS Centre. This week, we wrap up our up-close look at some of the players who are expected to be in the team’s lineup when it hits the ice against the legendary Habs.




HEIGHT: 5-foot-11

WEIGHT: 200 pounds


BORN: April 21, 1984 (age 27)


DRAFTED: Detroit, 2002 NHL entry draft

ROUND: Seventh (229th overall)

  • Named the Red Wings rookie of the year in 2008 by the Detroit Broadcasters Association.
  • Despite not playing the minimum 40 games (he appeared 32) and not in the playoffs, Meech had his name engraved on the Stanley Cup, due to a petition to the NHL by the Wings.
  • Paired with Dion Phaneuf during his days manning the blue-line with the Red Deer Rebels; won a Memorial Cup with the Rebels in 2000-01.
  • Member of Canadian world junior squad in 2004 that lost 4-3 to the U.S. in the final in Finland.
  • Favourite player growing up was Wings defenceman Nik Lidstrom
  • As a kid, once scored eight touchdowns in a football game.

TRANSACTIONS: Signed by the Jets as a free agent on July 1, 2011.
