Big picture

Well, we know this after Saturday’s action — the Jets aren’t going to back away from aggressive opponents and they will answer the bell. The big question may turn out to be, will they recognize the right time to do so?

Little picture

It was a great team statement that tryout winger Trod Bodie of Portage la Prairie stood up for teammate Toby Enstrom in the second period, but he took a double-minor penalty on the scuffle and the Predators cashed both power plays to take the lead for good.

Game-breaker

Martin Erat and Patric Hornqvist, two of the Preds’ top forwards, scored 1:20 apart and both on the power play while Bodie was cooling his heels and Nashville made that lead stand up for the final 26 minutes.

Mason popular

Chris Mason had another night with little luck on the road, permitting three power-play goals that were hardly his fault. He allowed five in Tuesdays’s road game in Columbus. But fear not, Jets fans, Nashville coach Barry Trotz thinks you’ll come around on Mason, who was the starter in Nashville earlier in his career.

“One of my favourite players all-time,” Trotz said. “He comes with a work ethic that is contagious for your hockey team. The people in Winnipeg will love Chris. Talk about salt of the earth, Chris is your guy.”

Another goal

Defenceman Paul Postma, trying desperately to move up the depth chart and maybe to the seventh D spot, scored for a second straight game in the pre-season. Postma, who has played two AHL seasons, said Saturday he’s not so worried about scoring.

“For me, probably not,” he said. “It’s nice to put up some points but I think these coaches and the management know I can put up points. I want to be consistent with my defensive play. That’s my biggest concern right now, battling and competing in my defensive zone.”
