Rookie Mark Scheifele made good on his near-promise Monday that the No. 45 he wore during training camp and exhibition games was history.

At Tuesday’s practice, No. 55 was on the back of his helmet.

He’s switching, not as some speculated because five plus five equals 10, the number of his junior coach, former Jets superstar Dale Hawerchuk, but because his 20-year-old brother, Kyle, used to wear it.

Kyle Scheifele, currently a student at Conestoga College in Scheifele’s hometown of Kitchener, Ont., will be here for Sunday’s season opener.

“He’s been such a big supporter of me, teaching me things,” the rookie said Tuesday, the day after he signed his first NHL contract.

“We were best friends growing up. He was a good guy to look at as a role model.”
