Big picture

Thirteen goals against in three games, just five for. This, as Jets coach Claude Noel said Saturday night, is not a road the team wants to go down. The defensive vulnerabilities are certainly a big factor in the team’s 0-3 mark to date, leaving it still the only pointless outfit in the NHL.

Little picture

An ugly start — a giveaway in the first minute turned into Daymond Langkow’s goal — and little pushback made this result pretty apparent after the first period, when the Coyotes were ahead 2-0. And through three games, the Jets have surrendered a power-play goal in each game, and scored not a one themselves.

Turning point

The first-period defensive-zone fire drill that was the preamble to Oliver Ekman-Larsson’s first goal of the game was pretty indicative of how the glue is not dry on what the Jets are trying to build.

More ice time

Rookie Mark Scheifele had different linemates at different times of Saturday’s game, but saw his most ice time of the first three games of his season.

The 18-year-old first-round draft pick played 16:22 in the game. He was without a shot on goal, but was a plus-one. Scheifele averaged 11-plus minutes in his first two outings.
