Big picture

The Jets have faced high-end opponents in their last two games and haven’t done enough to win either game. That leaves them stalled on 45 points and still outside the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference, though it’s just by one point today.

Little picture

Thursday’s loss was just Winnipeg’s seventh home defeat this season in 23 games. It began to go south at 13:36 of the second when Logan Couture came down the slot and wasn’t impeded near enough when the puck arrived in front of Jets goalie Ondrej Pavelec. Brad Winchester scored early in the third and the Jets simply had too few good opportunities to get anything by Sharks goalie Antti Niemi.

Game-breaker

The Jets had the first two power plays of the game, but couldn’t generate a whole lot. An inability to get the home crowd charged up to the top level worked against them as the night went on, leaving only a few odd calls by the officials to get the fans to any level of energy.

Free Press ★★★

★ Logan Couture, Sharks. 18 goals and plus 13. Excellence.

★★ Antti Niemi, Sharks. 24 saves, not all that tested.

★★★ Douglas Murray, Sharks. Hits hard, defends hard. That’s value.
