Big picture

Another opportunity lost for the Jets, now in a nosedive that is taking them further and further away from a playoff spot. This loss, as part of a stretch that has the Jets playing nine of 10 at the MTS Centre, came on a night in which Ottawa, seventh in the East, pulled further ahead with a win over Tampa while the Leafs, eighth in the East, lost to the Flames.

Little picture

The Jets’ power play struggled mightily, despite a couple of late chances in the third that could have turned the momentum back in their favour. Head coach Claude Noel talked about winning the puck battles with the man advantage, but it was the visitors who came out victorious in most of those situations.

Game-breaker

The game was tied 1-1 when the Isles’ PA Parenteau capitalized on a stretch of play in which the Jets were badly out-hustled in their own end, tipping home a point shot by Milan Jurcina for the winner.

Free Press ★★★

★ Evgeni Nabokov, G, Islanders — Superb night by the veteran netminder, kicking out 37 saves for his 14th win of the season and keeping his club in the playoff picture.

★★ Chris Thorburn, F, Jets — Good work by the GST line against the Isles’ top unit of Tavares, Moulson and Parenteau and chipped in with his third goal of the season.

★★★ John Tavares, F, Islanders — Buzzed the Jets net all night and showed some of the flash and skill that has established him as one of the NHL’s emerging stars.
