ABOUT THE OILERS
The Oilers come into tonight’s game with another new coach, former Jets skater and Moose captain Dallas Eakins. They finished last season’s short schedule in 12th place in the West at 19-22-7.
Defenceman Andrew Ference, a free-agent signing in the summer, was named the new captain of the team this week, succeeding the traded Shawn Horcoff.
Edmonton went 5-2-1 in the exhibition season (1-1 vs. Winnipeg) but dropped its last game 4-0 to Dallas in Oklahoma City.
The Oilers host a Winnipeg club for the first time in more than 17 years. In the Jets 2.0 inaugural season, the teams played just once, at the MTS Centre. March 29, 1996 was the last visit by Jets 1.0 for a regular-season game.
