үӯ FREE STUFF:

It was scarf giveaway day at the MTS Centre, as 15,000 fans arrived at their seats to find a free bit of Scotiabank-Jets swag. Too bad by the end of the second period some were wondering if they could double as a free white flag.

үӯ NICE VOCALS:

Big cheers for the exquisite renditions of the national anthems by the Kenyan Boys Choir, which earned a major-label deal after singing for Barack Obama’s first inauguration in 2009. The Nairobi-based group, which is on a three-month tour of Canada, got to check out the rest of the game from prime seats in the press box. Hey, Stacey Nattrass is a gem, but it was a delight to hear the anthems in a completely different and richly harmonized style.

үӯ HOMETOWN BOY:

Jonathan Toews didn’t put a point on the board, but the Blackhawks’ secondary scoring had no problem solving Ondrej Pavelec. Heck, the Hawks’ fourth line came up big, as Marcus Kruger and Brandon Bollig, who is not exactly known for his scoring touch (zero points in 25 tilts last year), each had a two-point night.

“Some of those guys deserve it,” captain Jonathan Toews said. “We’re a strong team, and we roll four lines… It’s what makes us a dangerous team when we have so many guys who can go out and score.”

үӯ LOUDER NOW:

Winnipeg fans seemed to want to put on a good show for Toews, the returning hometown star, and even on a run-of-the-mill first-period penalty kill the MTS Centre was shockingly loud. Well, that changed quickly in the second period, as the Blackhawks stung again and again. There was just a tired and irritated quiet by the end. “You just managed to take the air right out of the building,” coach Claude Noel said. “That doesn’t help you at all. So that adds to the frustration level.”

үӯ UP NEXT:

The Jets play host to the Detroit Red Wings at 7 p.m. on Monday before popping down to Chicago for a Wednesday rematch against the Blackhawks.
