ST. PAUL, MINN. — Winnipeg Jets defenceman Zach Bogosian is “week-to-week” with a groin strain, head coach Claude Noel said Sunday.

“He has a moderate groin strain and so he’s more week-to-week right now,” Noel told reporters following his club’s morning skate at the Xcel Energy Center Sunday morning. “That’s pretty much where he’s at. How many weeks? We’ll just deal with week-to-week. We have to see how it progresses and stuff like that.”

Bogosian was hurt during the second period of Winnipeg’s 3-2 shootout win over Philadelphia Friday evening at the MTS Centre and Noel had warned reporters on Saturday that Bogosian’s injury was likely something more severe than just day-to-day.

Sunday’s update came after Bogosian was further examined in Winnipeg Saturday afternoon.

The loss of Bogosian meant the Jets sent out an adjusted lineup against the Minnesota Wild Sunday night for the first time since Winnipeg got on a four-game winning streak nine days ago.

With Bogosian out, defenceman Zach Redmond made his first regular-season NHL appearance since he suffered a horrifying cut to his femoral artery during practice on Feb. 21. But while Redmond drew into the lineup, it was Keaton Ellerby who took Bogosian’s customary position with Toby Enstrom against the Wild.

“(Bogosian) does a lot of things, so it’s minutes — fairly heavy minutes — that you have to fill,” said Noel. “Right now, we’ll probably put Ellerby in there and go with that. Let’s see how he does and we’ll coach him through that stuff. He should be able, to a degree.”

Centre of the NHL universe

SO just how tough exactly is this new Central Division neighbourhood the Winnipeg Jets moved into this season?

Well, consider for a moment the plight of the red-hot Minnesota Wild.

“I think we’ve got 17 out of 20 points and we didn’t move in the standings. It’s kind of crazy,” Wild sniper Zach Parise mused on Sunday.

“We know we’ve got good teams in our division. And we have to keep winning just to keep up with those guys, because it doesn’t seem like they’re losing at all either,” said Parise.

Actually, Parise slightly underestimated how hot his team has been of late, only to find themselves still treading water.

With a record of 9-1-2 in 12 games heading into Sunday night, Minnesota had collected 20 of a possible 24 points.

And yet for all that winning, the Wild were still fourth in the Central with 28 points heading into Sunday night, trailing both Chicago and St. Louis and tied with Colorado, but having played one more game.

‘(Bogosian) does a lot of things, so it’s minutes — fairly heavy minutes — that you have to fill. Right now, we’ll probably put Ellerby in there and go with that. Let’s see how he does and we’ll coach him through that stuff. He should be able, to a degree’

The Jets were in sixth in the Central coming into Sunday with 22 points.

Goal drought continues for Kane

Jets winger Evander Kane was riding a seven-game goalless drought coming into the game and it stretched to eight after the 2-1 loss.

Which is not to say that Kane hasn’t been contributing offensively for the Jets. Indeed, with assists in three of his team’s four games coming into Sunday, Kane was a valuable contributor to the four-game winning streak the Jets brought into Minnesota.

But assists are one thing and goals quite another, and Kane says it’s no secret what he needs to be doing to give his team the best use of his assets.

“My job is to help the team win,” said Kane, “and one of the ways I do that best is scoring goals. Obviously, you don’t like to go games and games without scoring.

“But you try to find a way to battle through and get on the scoresheet.”
