No quarrel with the keepers

CLAUDE Noel kicked aside the notion of a brewing goaltender controversy Thursday, even if the recent numbers from Ondrej Pavelec and Al Montoya scream out it is unfolding before everyone’s eyes.

Pavelec, the Jets’ No. 1 puckstopper, is winless in his last five starts (0-4-1) with a .850 save percentage. Montoya, meanwhile, has won his last three starts, is 5-2-1 overall with .920 save percentage and 2.23 goals against average.

But Noel made it perfectly clear after practice Thursday that even though Pavelec’s numbers may be down, he is still their guy.

“We lean on both of them, primarily on one,” said Noel. “We have to recognize with Ondrej Pavelec that he’s our go-to guy. You have to find a balance as to how to play this and juggle this stuff.

“We know the situation. You’ve got to get your go-to guy going. I’m not into playing mind games with players and so we have to be smart with how we deal with stuff and up front.

Sniper on board

THE Jets inked the best right-wing prospect in their system on Thursday, signing Guelph Storm star Scott Kosmachuk to a three-year, two-way, entry level contract with an average annual value of $925,000.

The 19-year-old third-round (70th overall) draft pick of the Jets in 2012 has 48 points (25G, 23A) in 34 games this season.

Zach’s back

NOEL on the impending return of Zach Bogosian: “The thing with Zach is he’s got weight, he’s passionate, he can get the puck stopped, he can jump up and do a lot of things. He can be an effective player in the games. He’s a guy that should be in your top four and pretty much has been since I’ve been here. He’s a guy that can really help you.”

Bogosian has appeared in 21 games this season (1G, 3A), but averaged 22 minutes and 50 seconds before his injury.

NOTABLE NUMBERS: The Jets killed off another 5-on-3 situation (just 29 seconds in length) in the loss to Buffalo but have extended their perfect record to six when down two men this season… The Panthers arrive in Winnipeg after having played in Ottawa Thursday night. The Jets are just 2-2 in games in which the opponent is playing the second of games on consecutive nights… Mark Scheifele’s two goals against Buffalo on Tuesday came just 36 seconds apart. They were the quickest two goals scored by a Jet since the beginning of the 2011-12 season and the third-fastest pair in franchise history (the record 22 seconds, set by Jon Sim on Oct. 13, 2006).
