The Winnipeg Jets will have to survive from here to the Olympic break without sniping left-winger Evander Kane.
In an outcome they feared — new coach Paul Maurice voiced his concern about it on his first full day on the job — Kane’s right hand has become infected and he will sit out from now until late February, Maurice said after Tuesday’s morning skate at the MTS Centre.
Kane originally injured his hand in a late-game fight Jan. 7, battling Tampa Bay’s Eric Brewer.
The 22-year-old Vancouverite then missed four games while the deep gashed healed.
He came back into the lineup and played four games, beginning in Anaheim a week ago Tuesday.
“Last night, very, very late, it ballooned up,” the coach said on Tuesday. “He had his injury on the seventh. They do all the things that they know they have to do with those things, antibiotics, put his hand in a glove… and then you keep your fingers crossed. Unfortunately, it didn’t go.”
Kane’s 15 goals so far this season will be missed.
In his absence, at least to start, veteran winger Chris Thorburn will go back to the line with centre Mark Scheifele. Thorburn switched from right to left wing and was in that slot for a time when Kane was out earlier this month.
Right-winger Blake Wheeler is also on the line, at least for the start of this absence.
Winnipeg has five more games until the break that starts after a game in St. Louis Feb. 8. The team’s schedule resumes Feb. 27 with a home game against Phoenix.
Kane leads the Jets with four game-winning goals this season.
