Update on D-man Chiarot expected today
EXPECT to hear today if there’s additional bad injury news from the Winnipeg Jets.
Rookie defenceman Ben Chiarot was unable to complete Saturday’s game in Toronto. After fighting the Leafs’ Daniel Winnik at 8:23 of the third period, Chiarot sat a few moments in the penalty box and went to the locker-room and did not return.
After the game, Jets coach Paul Maurice said he didn’t expect any status report on Chiarot until later Sunday and that he’d have more to say when the team returns to practice today.
Winnipeg is already without left-winger Mathieu Perreault until early April, at best.
The race is on
IN losing in overtime to Toronto on Saturday night, the Jets reached only 71 points in the Central Division and Western Conference standings.
It’s still good enough to hang onto the conference’s first wild-card berth but the race is tightening.
Winnipeg has now gone six games without a win in regulation time. It is 4-2-1 in the last seven, but among the four wins is an overtime victory and two triumphs via shootout.
Maurice gives it his best
IN pressing to get two points out of Saturday’s game, Maurice relied heavily on his top forward guns.
He played Bryan Little 24 minutes 22 seconds (Little’s season average is 19:51), Andrew Ladd 23 minutes 22 seconds, Blake Wheeler 22:02 and Dustin Byfuglien 23:25.
The consequence was just 2:37 for Anthony Peluso and 2:51 for Carl Klingberg.
