Winnipeg star winger Patrik Laine, 19, who leads the club with 35 goals, hails from Tampere, about a two-hour car ride from Helsinki, while teammate Joel Armia is from Pori, a little over three hours northwest of the Helsinki.

Panthers' premier forward Aleksander Barkov, 23, is also from Tampere. He leads the Panthers with 25 goals and 64 points this year.

Jets 1.0 also featured a number of Finns, highlighted by Teemu Selanne and Teppo Numminen. In September 1994, Winnipeg played three exhibition games in Finland as part of the NHL International Challenge.

The NHL also announced the Edmonton Oilers and New Jersey Devils will play their 2018-19 season-opening game at the Scandinavium in Goteborg, Sweden, on Oct. 6.

The Devils and Oilers will complete their training camps in Europe — the Devils in Switzerland, and the Oilers in Germany — and each will play an exhibition game against a European squad.

New Jersey will play SC Bern in the Swiss city on Oct. 1. Edmonton will play Kölner Haie of the German league in Cologne on Oct. 3.
