The Winnipeg Ice have their leadership group in place for the start of the Western Hockey League season.

Peyton Krebs returns as captain of the squad, after being given the letter on his jersey last December when the franchise still resided in Cranbrook, B.C. The team relocated to the Manitoba capital following the 2018-19 season. Krebs, a centre from Okotoks, Alta., was selected in the first round (17th overall) of this summer’s NHL draft by the Vegas Golden Knights. Named as alternate captains are forwards Connor McClennon, 17, and Jakin Smallwood, 18, along with defenceman Chase Hartje, 19.

Winnipeg opens the 2019-20 campaign in Brandon on Friday night against the Wheat Kings, and the teams will meet again Saturday night at Wayne Fleming Arena on the University of Manitoba campus.
