BRANDON — Ty Thorpe scored a pair of power-play goals to spark the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 5-0 triumph over the Winnipeg Ice in a Western Hockey League pre-season game at Westoba Place on Friday night.
Ethan Kruger and Connor Ungar combined for a 35-save shutout.
Nolan Ritchie, Connor Gutenberg and Jonny Hooker also scored for the hosts, who fired 34 shots on Ice goaltenders Will Gurski and Daniel Hauser.
It was the first pre-season game for both teams and the Ice’s first game since the franchise was relocated from Cranbrook, B.C., in the off-season.
Brandon went 3-for-6 on the power play, while Winnipeg was scoreless in seven chances.
The teams will meet again tonight at Stride Place in Portage la Prairie. Game time is 7 p.m.
