EVERY Canadian athlete will be eligible for bonus money if they step on the podium in Vancouver next month.
But Canadian Olympic Committee CEO Chris Rudge acknowledges there was some discussion about whether the men’s hockey team should be eligible for the cash.
“As you can imagine, there was considerable debate about whether or not athletes who professionally make a lot of money should be able to avail themselves of this,” Rudge said Monday. “Everyone was unanimous that if we were going to do a program, this is to say thank you and reward athletes for their performance at the Olympics. Every athlete should be able to have the opportunity to receive the money.
“They are as eligible as everyone else.”
Canadian athletes will be awarded $20,000 for gold, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze — a practice the COC started for the 2008 Beijing Games and extended to Vancouver.
Only three of the 23 players on the roster of the Canadian men’s hockey team currently earn an annual salary of less than US$3.5 million. The combined income of Team Canada will be more than $120 million this season.
However, Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson is happy that they’ll be eligible for the Olympic medal bonus.
“We certainly understand how much money NHL players get, but they’re going to spend a heck of a lot of money on getting their families and that there to watch them,” said Nicholson.
