VANCOUVER — Mattias Ohlund and Loui Eriksson scored in the second period, helping Sweden shake off a slow start to beat Germany 2-0 Wednesday night.
The defending Olympic men’s hockey champions did not have a shot on net until midway through the scoreless first period in their Vancouver Games opener.
Sweden’s Henrik Lundqvist made 21 saves for the shutout, a strong start for the goaltender who led his team to gold four years ago in Turin. Germany’s Thomas Greiss stopped 23 shots.
The Swedes are trying to become the first team to win two Olympic golds since the NHL allowed its players take part in the Olympics 12 years ago, although the Canadians and Russian teams are widely regarded as the favourites.
Sweden had a sluggish beginning, just as Canada did in its opener but the Swedes didn’t bounce back with dominant play as the host country did when it routed Norway 8-0 Tuesday.
Ohlund broke a scoreless tie at 4:29 of the second period. His slap shot from the left side of the left circle got past Greiss thanks in part to Vancouver Canuck Daniel Sedin leaping in front of the net to screen the goalie.
Finland 5 Belarus 1
NIKLAS HAGMAN scored two goals, including one while sliding on his knee, to lead Finland to a 5-1 win over Belarus in each team’s Olympic men’s hockey opener Wednesday.
Olli Jokinen, Valtteri Filppula and Jarkko Ruutu also scored, while Teemu Selanne had an assist to register his Olympic record-tying 36th career point in his fifth Winter Games. Mikko Koivu had three assists in a game in which the Finns outshot Belarus 28-4 through two periods and 45-12 overall.
