8:25 p.m.

P.K. Subban of the NHL’s Nashville Predators has done his best to welcome home Lindsey Vonn and into retirement.

Subban tweeted out video Tuesday of Vonn returning to Nashville, Tennessee, saying she was back in the mix and officially retired.

Vonn walked in after an 18-hour flight greeted by a balloon bouquet reading “Officially ReTiRed” and a cake made to look like a goat complete with a medal around its neck and both skis and pink ski poles on the side.

Another goat, stuffed, awaited on a bed for the 2010 downhill Olympic champion and the four-time overall World Cup title winner who won bronze in the downhill Sunday at the world championships in the final race of her career.

Olympic champion Switzerland has won the team event again at the Alpine skiing world championships.

The team of Aline Danioth, Andrea Ellenberger, Wendy Holdener, Sandro Simonet, Daniel Yule and Ramon Zenhausern narrowly edged rival Austria in the final of the parallel event.

The final ended 2-2 but Switzerland had a lower overall time.

Italy beat Germany to take bronze.

Mikaela Shiffrin says she was “flattered” rather than disappointed at Lindsey Vonn and Bode Miller questioning her decision to sit out several events at the world championships.

Shiffrin has expanded on a long and heartfelt Instagram message she posted soon after Vonn and Miller expressed surprise at her not competing in every discipline in Are, Sweden.

Shiffrin says “I was super, super flattered (but) the reason I made this post was because they both also said they thought essentially that I was wrong in making my decision and I have reasons that maybe they didn’t consider in making my decision.”

After winning the super-G on the opening day of competition, Shiffrin decided to not compete in the Alpine combined event and skipped town to train in Trysil, Norway, for a few days. She returned to Are on Monday ahead of the giant slalom and slalom at the end of this week.

Shiffrin says, “I definitely feel that it was the right decision for me. I’m a little bit fresher going into these races, but mainly I’ve got in some really great training, that is important for me.”

She says it “almost feels like a second start to the world championships.”

Scandinavian skiing royalty Kjetil Andre Aamodt and Anja Paerson have come to Mikaela Shiffrin’s defence over her decision to race only three events at the world championships.

Shiffrin’s decision to sit out the Alpine combined was questioned by fellow Americans Lindsey Vonn and Bode Miller.

Aamodt and fellow Norwegian Lasse Kjus won Olympic or worlds medals in all five disciplines during their careers.

Aamodt says, “She’s smarter than me and Lasse Kjus. … We won some races but we did a lot of bad races because we were pretty tired. … We want to see her win five events in a championships in the future, hopefully, but I think it’s smart of her and the team around her to hold back a little.”

Added Paerson, who won five medals — including three golds — at her home worlds in the 2007 worlds in Are, says, “She knows that she’s not capable enough yet and maybe she has to plan in the future. But I love that she’s taking her own way.”

Shiffrin opened the championships by winning the super-G.

The team event is scheduled for Tuesday.
