SAPPORO, Japan – Canadian marathoner Dayna Pidhoresky is permitted to train again after spending a week in quarantine ahead of her race at the Tokyo Olympics.

The 34-year-old from Windsor, Ont., had been in isolation at the Canadian team’s camp in Gifu, after she was informed upon arrival that a passenger on her flight had tested positive for COVID-19.

Despite being vaccinated and producing negative tests upon arrival, Pidhoresky had to quarantine in her room. Athletics Canada provided a stationary bike.

Pidhoresky, Natasha Wodak and Canadian record-holder Malindi Elmore will race the women’s Olympic marathon on Saturday in Sapporo.

Wodak posted on Twitter: “Thankfully once we got to Sapporo on Saturday Dayna was allowed to train with us again! It’s been an incredibly tough week for D- she’s staying strong & all of us are here supporting her as much as we can.”

Athletics Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee said in a joint statement that they “worked closely with local prefecture officials and the Canadian Embassy to resolve the situation involving Dayna. . . We would also like to thank the City of Gifu which has been wonderful hosts. Team Canada remains committed to following the guidelines outlined in the Tokyo 2020 Playbook and the Japanese Government’s regulations.”
