PARIS – Outgoing French Football Federation president Jean-Pierre Escalettes says he is ashamed of France’s World Cup fiasco and takes a share of responsibility for what happened.
Escalettes, who formally resigned Friday, says he does not yet know who has been chosen as his successor. He spoke after the federation’s federal council met Friday.
Escalettes gave his first lengthy public explanation about what he called the “debacle” at the World Cup. France didn’t win any games, and there were open conflicts between the squad and team management.
France players boycotted a training session in protest at Nicolas Anelka’s exclusion from the squad following an expletive-filled tirade directed at coach Raymond Domenech.
Escalettes said, “I am ashamed. I present my apologies.”
