WINNIPEG’S Hector Vergara has been selected to work as an assistant referee in the third-place game between Uruguay and Germany today in Port Elizabeth.

It will be the third game as an assistant referee at the 2010 World Cup for the 43-year-old Vergara.

With the appearance, Vergara will set a FIFA record for most World Cup games as a combination of referee and assistant referee with 14.

Vergara, the executive director of the Manitoba Soccer Association in Winnipeg, worked the June 14 match between Italy and Paraguay and the June 25 match between Portugal and Brazil.

Officials were evaluated on their performances throughout the tournament with only those scoring the highest being asked to work the in the third-place and championship games.

Vergara is working in his third and final World Cup as there is an age limit of 45 for World Cup officials.

He also worked in the 2002 and 2006 World Cup tournaments.

“No matter what I achieve in the World Cup, it will be fantastic for me because I never imagined in my wildest dreams having the opportunity to experience one World Cup, never mind three,” said Vergara, in an email exchange with the Free Press earlier in the tournament.
